OSAT Reading Specialist Exam


According to a state bill, passed in 1995., all teachers who wish to teach in the state of Oklahoma public schools must have their knowledge in the matter assessed. These assessments today are administered by the CEOE or Certification Examinations for Oklahoma Educators. One of these tests, under code number 015 is the OSAT Reading Specialist Exam. This test has the core goal of examining an entry-level teacherĀ“s education and knowledge in the field of reading, and thus preparing them for education and working in the classroom.

Eligibility for OSAT Reading Specialist Exam

Teachers and educators who wish to teach or work as reading specialists in public and private schools can take this test. Even entry-level teachers can apply for this test. The test can be taken year-round except for Sundays and holidays, until September 2021. After that, the test can be taken during certain testing windows. The schedule of the windows lasts for up to one month and these are available online. Also, the test can be taken around Oklahoma and nation-wide, in designated CBT sites.

Format of Reading Specialist Exam


The OSAT Reading Specialist exam is a CBT or computer test, not available in the paper-and-pen form. It consists of a total of 81 questions, of which 80 are multiple-choice and selected-response questions. After finishing this set of questions, follows one longer assignment in the form of a constructed-response essay. The test is timed and can be taken for up to 4 hours and 15 minutes, where the first 15 minutes are reserved for a short how-to and signing of a nondisclosure agreement.

How to apply for Reading Specialist Exam


For applying to this test, out-of-state entry-level teachers first need to contact the Department of Education of the state of Oklahoma, for getting an ID number. All Oklahoma teachers already have this ID number, and after finishing the OGET test can apply further for the Reading Specialist exam. When applying, a fee of a total of $135 should be paid in advance. After that, the registration will be valid for the next year.

Scores for Reading Specialist Exam


The passing score for this test is 240 since the results can differ between 100 and 300 points. Official test scores are available up to one month after taking it, and they will be available online.
