OSAT Vocal General Music Exam


The OSAT 003 is one of the music teacher exams which prepares the candidates for a career in public school music education. This class is taught in public schools, through General Music class, and choral or instrumental ensembles. It is about teaching and educating youth about vocal or general music, in a school setting. Music education uses all areas of learning, like psychomotor areas with a focus on the development of skills in music, the cognitive aspect which focuses on the acquisition of music knowledge, and the affective aspect with appreciation and sensitivity to music.

This test is administered over the CEOE or Certification Examinations for Oklahoma Educators and by the state. Oklahoma public schools require all teachers to be certified and prepared before setting out into the classrooms. When talking about this exam, teachers need to specialize in the theme of music. This means they need to have a background education in this field. After passing the test, you are eligible to teach in a public school teacher in kindergarten, primary, secondary or high school.

Eligibility for OSAT Vocal General Music Exam

All entry-level teachers with a background in music arts are eligible to apply for taking this test. It can be taken year-round after picking a date and location on which to take it. To earn Oklahoma, teacher certification candidates must complete a bachelor’s degree and a teacher education program approved by the Oklahoma Commission for Teacher Preparation or OCTP. Candidates must take and pass three assessments administered by the OCTP:

  • Oklahoma General Education Test (OGET)
  • Oklahoma Subject Area Test (OSAT),
  • and Oklahoma Professional Teaching Examination (OPTE).

Syllabus of OSAT Vocal General Music Exam

The Vocal/General Music exam should include the following areas:

  • Listening Skills – 23%
  • Vocal Performance and Music Methodology – 14%
  • Music Theory and Composition – 26%
  • Music History and Culture – 22%

Format of OSAT Vocal General Music Exam

This test can be taken anywhere in the state of Oklahoma and nationwide since it is a computer-based test. It consists of 80 selected-response questions and 1 constructed-response assignment, with a duration of up to 4 hours. The constructed-response question comes from Vocal Performance and Music Methodology worth 15%.

How to Apply for OSAT Vocal General Music Exam

The first thing one needs is a teaching ID for the state of Oklahoma, with which to register online on the official testing site. After choosing to register for the OSAT 003 test, a fee should be paid in advance. This price consists of $80 as a base fee

  • $25 CBT fee
  • $30 registration processing fee

Scores for OSAT Vocal General Music Exam

All OSAT testing scores fall between 100 and 300 points, and a passing score is considered to be everything above 240 points.
