NYSTCE Dance Exam

The New York State Test Certification Examinations (NYSTCE) Dance Exam is a computer-based exam that tests the capability to become an effective dance teacher for public schools in the State of New York. It can be taken year-round by anyone who wants to become a dance teacher. Once you attain your certification, it is valid unless revoked by the New York State Education Department.

Eligibility for the NYSTCE Dance Exam

  • The NYSTCE Dance Exam is available for anyone who wants to become a New York State public-school dance teacher. These candidates must be confident in their dance skills and pass valid identification (ID), and residency requirements.
  • Dance teacher candidates must be residents in the State of New York at the time of registration.

Syllabus of the NYSTCE Dance Exam

The NYSTCE Dance Exam includes two main categories:

  • Selected response
  • Constructed response

Within these two categories are five subareas:

  • Dance Elements and Skills
  • Creating and Performing Dance
  • Anatomy, Health, and Dance in Everyday Life
  • Dance and Culture
  • Responding to and Analyzing Dance: Constructed Response Assignment

Selected-Response Section

  • It constitutes the 80% of the total test score.
  • There are an estimated 22-23 questions per each of the four categories.
  • 135 minutes are given for their selected-response section.

Constructed Response Section

  • It constitutes 20% of the total score.

  • 60 minutes are allocated for the constructed response.

The exam is designed to measure teacher comprehension in specific dance content areas and the dance teacher’s ability to help students achieve their learning goals as dancers.
