North Carolina READY End-of-Grade and End-of-Course Tests

North Carolina READY End-of-Grade and End-of-Course tests are conducted to sample student’s knowledge & ability of subject-related concepts as per the North Carolina Standard studies. They are designed to measure the performance of the student on goals, and objectives as specified in course studies. It was initiated in context with the legislation passed by North Carolina General Assembly- the North Carolina Elementary and Secondary Reform Act of 1984.

Eligibility for North Carolina READY End-of-Grade and End-of-Course

The North Carolina Department designs and manages statewide assessments that are administered for students enrolled in public and charter schools from grades 3-12. These standardized tests are used to measure the progress of students from grade 3rd to grade 8th.

These assessments help serve the purpose of school, state as per the federal guidelines. It covers-

• Reading (Grades 3-8)
• Mathematics (Grades 3-8)
• Science (Grades 5-8)

The assessments from NC End of Grade and NC End, of course, provide a basis for the evaluation to parents, teachers plan the future of the students by strengthening the learning process. The North Carolina testing program determines each school's yearly progress-AYP (annual yearly progress) as required by the federal No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB).

Syllabus for North Carolina READY End-of-Grade and End-of-Course

NC EOG: 3rd Grade- 8th Grade

These tests are aligned to North Carolina state standards which define what the students should learn every year.

• The NC EOG reading test and NC EOG math test are provided to students in grades 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th. This helps identify how well they are meeting the grade-level expectations.
• 5th and 8th-grade students are required to take the NC EOG science test.
• NC Writing assessment is conducted for 4th grade, 7th grade, and 10th grade.
• All students are required to take NC tests for computer skills in 8th grade and must also achieve proficient scores to graduate.
• Knowledge is assessed indirectly through the application and understanding of the terms with context to the questions. All test items are multiple-choice.

NC EOC- End of Course Tests

All North Carolina High school students undertake End of Course tests to assess their performance of the content areas as regulated in North Carolina Standard Course studies.

• NC EOC tests are provided in Algebra I, Algebra II, English I, Biology, Civics and economics, US history, Geometry, Chemistry, Science.
• Students are required to score proficient on 5 essential tests- Algebra I, Biology, Civics and Economics, English I, and US history to graduate.
• EOC assessments are aligned to NCSCos for English language arts and mathematics.
• All EOC assessments should be administered online.

Format of North Carolina READY End-of-Grade and End-of-Course

NC personalized assessment tool is aimed towards a balanced assessment that provides detailed data for immediate feedback about student performance. The system helps provide immediate and detailed inputs on grade level-specific standards. The tests are conducted at the end of the school year and every school has a specific internal test calendar. The testing time varies according to the subject and grades being evaluated.

For example- The testing time for the EOG Reading test is 140 minutes to a maximum of 240 minutes.

The tests consist of the following types of questions and they include-

• Multiple response questions.
• Multi-select or two-part questions.
• Descriptive or Extended constructed response questions.
• The online and written exam for the English II assessment is a combination of multiple-choice and constructed response questions.
• The online and written exam for Maths 1 consists of- calculator inactive and active.
• The online NC Maths 1 and 3 covers multiple-choice questions, numeric entry items, and technology-enhanced items.
• The online biology assessment covers multiple-choice, technology-enhanced, and written exam covers all multiple-choice questions.

Scores of North Carolina READY End-of-Grade and End-of-Course

NC EOG and NC EOC tests are scored and evaluated on 4 performance levels-

• Level 1 being the lowest and level 4 being the highest.
• Students scoring above level 3 are considered excellent and proficient.
• NC Computer skills and Competency tests are scored on a performance basis.
