Per the NY State Education Department DOE, all tests are scored by teachers. However, no teacher from the students’ school may score a student's exam from their own school. Students with a disability may take alternative examinations through the New York State Alternative Assessment, (NYSAA). This computer-based test is a reduced version of the regular state examination and does not include the social studies component.

After completing their timed exam, students' results are scored, and they receive a scaled score. They are then divided into four performance levels and information on their strengths and weaknesses are reported to their parents.
