To get the certification as an English language teacher, candidate has to appear in TExES English Language Arts and Reading Exam. This exam is conducted by SBEC (State Board for Educator Certification) under the TExES wing. TExES English Language Arts and Reading Exam measures the candidates knowledge and excellence in the subject. Topics covered in TExES English Language Arts and Reading Exam are literature reading, attaining language arts, skills for reading, interpreting literary and non literary text and pieces, writing pieces, articles, write ups, analyzing journals and lingual and literary important text, media communication, spoken word and oral interaction etc. These topics carry unequal weightage, hence candidate should prepare accordingly. TExES English Language Arts and Reading Exam carries 90 multiple choice questions, out of which 80 are scored. There is either single item or clustered item type questions in TExES English Language Arts and Reading Exam. Candidate should try to attempt maximum questions since there are no negative marks for wrong answers. The entire score of the candidate is converted on the scale of 300, out of which 240 is the minimum passing marks.
