MTEL Music Exam Study Guide


MTEL Music Exam is administered by Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to give certification to eligible candidates. After getting this certification candidate gets the permission to practice as a Music Teacher in Massachusetts State.

Massachusetts Tests for Educators Licensure is available in two mediums. Candidate can choose any of the following options according to his convenience:-

  • On Paper

How can a candidate register for the exam?


Candidate can get register for the certification through any of the following medium:-

  2. Mail or
  3. Telephone (this service is limited to specific time and date)

Eligibility for MTEL Music Exam


To appear for MTEL Music Exam, candidate needs to meet all the eligibility conditions of the education board.

  • Candidate should hold bachelor degree from state approved college.
  • Candidate should hold certification from the state approved college.

Format of MTEL Music Exam


MTEL Music Exam includes subjective and objective questions. There are 100 multiple choice questions and 2 open response queries in MTEL Music Exam. Candidate gets four hour time to complete the MTEL Music Exam. Scoring of MTEL Music Exam is done on the scale of 300, out of which 240 are the minimum marks required to get the certification.

Since MTEL Music Exam includes aural queries, 20 seconds interval is given to the candidate before the second part of the query is played. Subjective questions in MTEL Music Exam are to be answered in 150 300 words. Moreover candidate should give 20 30 minutes for carving the response of open ended questions.

Syllabus for MTEL Music Exam

  • History and literature of music music in various ages

MTEL Music Exam includes aural queries also. Candidate will be made to listen an aural piece on the basis of which candidate will be required to answer the asked query.

MTEL Music Exam is conducted in every alternative month. If the candidate falls short of the marks in the exam then he is liable to appear again for the exam. However candidate needs to wait for 60 days before taking the exam again.
